More than 50 seventeenth-century icon banners at the Swedish Army Museum turned out to be the work of Ukrainian masters, wrongly attributed as Russian. The project sets out to correct that attribution.
Ukrainian artist Mykhailo Skop, son of icon painter Lev Skop, discovered that more than 50 seventeenth-century icon banners held at the Swedish Army Museum are the work of Ukrainian masters. Museum records list them as “Russian,” because they were used by Russian troops. The project aims to correct the attribution of these works, restore historical justice, revive the memory of Ukrainian icon painters, and introduce the European academic community to unknown chapters of the Ukrainian Baroque.
